Today's sightings - 04/01/2020

Water levels are currently dropping away nicely on the reserve, spits of land are appearing and we will update as soon as paths are re-opened. Swan feeds and hare walks are the best times to have our wonderful variety of species pointed out to you.

We will be opening the footpath to Nelson-Lyle hide in the morning, Sun 5 January, unless water levels increase before then. Wellies will be essential to get to this additional hide from the main hide.

The Ouse Washes are currently providing an essential role as a flood relief area, but the recent dry conditions are allowing the water levels to drop. Spits of land are starting to appear providing places for birds to land and roost. We will put updates across the website as and when footpaths re-open.

The swans that have been feeding out in the fields throughout the day are returning to the reserve at dusk, gliding down onto the water in front of the main hide. Good numbers of swans can be seen at the floodlit feeds on Saturdays and Sundays. Lady Fen is providing a greater variety of birds, with the best views from the visitor centre and carpark. If you arrive before the centre opens at 10am, bring a hot drink and from the car park you can enjoy watching the swans flying out. During the day enjoy watching flocks of wigeon, lapwing and golden plover, as well as highlights including pintail, shoveler, teal, shelduck, great white egret.
