Bittern booming and avocet chicks

BOOM!! We have a Bittern booming in the Reedbed. They are here every year but fingers crossed we have a lady Bittern this year!!

All the hard work from the volunteers and the reserve team over the winter has paid off!!

Photo of a bittern in flight yesterday by Joe Maddison from West Lancashire Nature Notes.

The first Avocet chicks of the year have hatched and are running around Woodend Marsh. We have 30 pairs this year (50% increase on last year). They are loving the predator fence. The best hide to see them from is the Tomlinson hide.
