As human beings, we’re a very sociable species and we all like nothing better than to keep in touch with out friends via email, Twitter and Facebook, to share news, stories, jokes and gossip. It would appear that animals can be very similar; an individual animal will have particular members of its group that it really enjoys to “hang out” with and that it will invest its time and energy in maintaining a “friendship” with. Research currently ongoing at WWT Slimbridge and the University of Exeter aims to investigate the extent of such friendships within the flocks of flamingos that WWT keeps. Just why do flamingos behave the way they do? How do individuals within a flock interact with one another? And who is responsible for choreographing the amazing courtships behaviours that flamingos are so famous for?
