June brings sunshine and nesting Caribbeans.

There's a lot of activity going on in the Caribbena flamingo enclosure at WWT Slimbridge this week. The bad weather of late is long forgotten by the flamingos and this lovely warm spell has seen the Caribbean flamingos start to lay eggs. The flamingo breeding at WWT is very carefully managed and the expertise of Mark, Phil and the others avics ensures that fluffy grey chicks are a regular site come mid-summer. The birds have to be in tip-top condition and they must have the right mix of sunshine, rain and mud (yes, there is the perfect type of mud for flamingo nests!) for them to feel the time is right to commence breeding. So this week has been perfect. Here are a few photos of the nesting activity that can currently be seen opposite the restaurant at WWT Slimbridge. Birds have started to try and build nests at the back of the pen, but will move over to the nest mounds (part built by the avics) in time.

Not in the usual spot, but the birds are messing around with muds, twigs and vegetation as a start to nest making.

This bird has the right idea! A Caribbean flamingo at WWT Slimbridge has made a perfect nest in the middle of the nesting area and settles down for its incubation time.

When the birds start to think about nesting there is normally a lot of squabbling, arguing and bickering with neighbours, as can be seen!
