Check out the Chileans!

With the longer days, the Chileans have kicked off their courtship display with a real gusto and you can currently get some awesome views of the birds dancing right up close to the public paths in the South American Pen. This is happening at its best in the afternoon right at the moment, so if that's the time you normally go and visit WWT Slimbridge, see if you can spot what's going on in this flock.

I always like it when the birds "take over" the stepping stones and perch on them as they wing salute and head flag. It really brings the intricate display of the flamingo right into the realm of the visitor and, if you're patient and quiet, you will get to see all of the different component parts of a flamingo's dancing steps and get an insight into what the birds are trying to say to each other.

And off they go. When enough birds get really excited, they will march (like the lessers do, but less coordinated) off around their pool. And off they go. When enough birds get really excited, they will march (like the lessers do, but somewhat less coordinated) off around their pool.

Fingers crossed, and not tempting fate, this flirty behaviour will become nest building and egg laying as summer progresses. But in the mean time, it really does show what a good place WWT Slimbridge is to observe natural behaviour of animals that would otherwise be very difficult to go and see.
