Brand new baby!

The first Caribbean flamingo chick has hatched today. Pipping (breaking out) of the egg yesterday, the chick was returned to the nest site on which it was laid, and this morning Phil was pleased to report a healthy chick had completely emerged from the shell. Proud parent RGX has been a model example of parental care so far, keeping the chick warm and dry in the lovely summer (cough!) weather this July. The chick is still very wobbly and has a straight beak, which will eventually turn into the familiar curve that gives flamingos their unique style. Here's to many more chicks following this little fellow!

The first Caribbean flamingo egg to start hatching at the beginning of July 2012 back on its nest so that the parents can tend to their new arrival.

Only a few hours old, the chick is tended by parent RGX who has done an excellent job of keeping it sheltered from the unseasonal heavy rains.

Young flamingos hatch with squidgy, wobbly legs and a straight beak. It takes a few hours before they can stand properly. A quick close-up of the new arrival when its parent briefly stood up for a stretch.
