On Wednesday 25 March Warden Suzi Lanaway reports lots of brimstone and red admiral butterflies and a couple of beeflies (pic above) in the sensory (herb) garden.There was also a pair of oystercatchers in the Bewick's Swan enclosure and grass snakes show

Moorhen chicks a sign of spring
On the wet grassland we now have 5 pairs of lapwing sitting on eggs. Other signs of spring include the newly hatched nest of moorhens on the Lakes & Forest exhibit. A pair of greylag geese have hatched 5 goslings along the channels of the Wetland Discover

Harriers, kestrel and more raptors
A kestrel has been spotted all over the site - he has been perched up on the owl next box near Lapwing Hide sheltering from the rain last weekend. Plenty of birds of prey around now – red kites, peregrines, buzzards, sparrowhawk.

Bittern in the reedbeds
A bittern was spotted in the reedbed and this elusive heron was been seen again on Monday.

Hen harrier comes into roost
December moths, roosting laping and a predatory merlin chasing pied wagtails onsite last week. A female hen harrier has been showing up with the marsh harriers in the late afternoon to roost in the reedbeds.

Cormorant numbers high
Last Tuesday we hit a high of twelve cormorants between the Ramsar and Sand Martin hides. The cormorants are also fishing on the Arun Riverlife lagoon.
